Shows FAQ

What kinds of shows do you offer?

The majority of our programming is longform improv - a character-driven narrative-leaning style of improv - featuring local performers trained at Union Comedy and elsewhere.

Our premiere show The Pickle (Sat @ 9) consists of a rotating selection of some of Boston's best improvisers doing scenes based on stories told by a new guest each week. The Weekend Show (Fri & Sat @ 7:30) showcases our handpicked house teams. Friday Night Fusion (Fri @ 9) features a combination of house teams and local independent teams. Cagematch (Sundays @ 6:30) pits two independent teams head to head where the audience votes for the winner.

As a training center, we also prioritize providing stage time to students and other performers in training, so we host regular shows called "jams" where anyone can sign up to perform.

Will I have to participate or can I just watch?

Some shows will have elements of voluntary audience participation (most improv shows start by asking the audience for a "suggestion" - a word or answer to a question used for inspiration), but in general you can expect to just sit back and enjoy the show.

How long are shows?

Most of our improv shows are 1 hour. The Kerfuffle is usually ~2hrs.

Are your shows family friendly?

Our shows are PG13 at minimum and commonly get to R-level content and language. We do not have an age minimum to attend shows, but you may not find our shows appropriate for anyone younger than 16.

How do I get there?

Somerville Ave has free 2-hour street parking. We also have an MBTA bus stop serving routes 83 and 87 right out front and a Bluebikes stations across the street, so we encourage you to take advantage of non-driving options!

Do you serve alcohol or food?

We do not sell alcohol. We do sell bottled water and bags of chips. You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks.

Is there a discount for large groups?

Yes! Orders of 8+ tickets automatically receive 20% off at checkout.

Can I hire you to perform at my event?

It's definitely possible depending on the details. Email us at info@unioncomedy.com and we'll go from there.

How can I perform at Union Comedy?

If you have an existing improv team we're taking rolling submissions for longform teams to perform in 10-25 minute slots at Cagematch, Friday Night Fusion, or our weekend jam. Email Pat at pkearnan@unioncomedy.com to book a date.

If you have an hour-long concept show such as a genre narrative, tv show parody, character show, etc you can SUBMIT HERE to put it up at Union Comedy Presents which is Saturdays at 6pm. Sketch and other scripted shows are welcome to submit. We do not charge a rental fee for independently produced shows in this time slot, but we do keep 100% of ticket sales.

If you do not have a team you are welcome to join our weekly jam Scramble!!!  Sundays at 5pm.

We hold auditions for House Teams every 6 months in March and September. Fall 2024 dates are TBD.

Keep an eye on our website and Instagram page for updates.

If you're brand new to improv or need a refresher we recommend CLASSES.
